Elafonisi

Elafonisi is a small island, 75 km southwest of Chania, which, together with the opposite beach of Elafonisi, is one of the most famous tourist destinations and is included in all the lists for the best beaches in the world.

Elafonisi is famous for its pink sandy beach, which has been created with the mixing of red corals and fine white sand. The pink beach and the turquoise waters make the place unique. It is an exotic paradise that takes your breath away. The sea that separates the island from the opposite beach is shallow, and does not exceed 1 meter in depth. It is easy to walk and explore the island. There are sand dunes where rare endemic flowers grow. It is a breeding ground for black petrels and herring gulls and it is home to Mediterranean seals. The island is protected and has been designated a Natura area. Visitors must respect the area and it is forbidden to cut flowers or take sand with them.

Also, the island has an interesting history, as, in 1824, during the Greek Revolution, 800 people, who were hiding on the island, lost their lives, when a horse walked across and the Turks discovered them. There is a monument on the island, to remind us of that day. There is, also, a lighthouse and the small church of Agia Irini.

The place is ideal for families with small children, as the waters are shallow and the beach offers umbrellas and sunbeds. There are lifeguards and facilities for water sports such as kite surfing and sup boarding. Children can swim, explore the seabed and the surrounding beaches safely.

The route from Chania is very interesting, it is a mountainous country road with several turns, passing through many villages. It is safe; however, it needs caution. Behind the organized beach, there is a large car park and traditional taverns with typical Cretan food.

Chrysoskalitissa is a monastery, just 5 kilometers away from Elafonisi. It is perched on a 35-meter rock and has an unlimited view of the sea. It got its name from the 98th step of the stairs, which was said to be golden. The miraculous icon of the Dormition of the Virgin from the 17th century, was found inside the rock where the monastery was built. The icon is very special as the head of the Virgin Mary lies on the right, and not on the left, as usual. The monastery houses a small folklore and ecclesiastical museum.

Elafonisi and the surrounding area is an excellent destination to relax and enjoy nature.
