Makrygialos is a large seaside village located 24 kilometers east of Ierapetra. It is the most touristic spot in south-eastern Crete with large hotels and many rooms for rent. It is an ideal destination for families and it has long beaches with shallow, calm, clear blue waters. The good weather in the area allows visitors to enjoy the sun and the sea until the end of Autumn.
The 1 km long Great Beach is very well organized with umbrellas, water sports, showers, etc. It is surrounded by many cafes and taverns. In many places, there are tamarind trees for free, natural shade. The beach is also ideal for adults who do not know how to swim well and small pets are welcome everywhere. West of the Great Beach, there is a smaller, not organized, but beautiful one with clear waters and a dreamy view of the South Cretan Sea.
The harbor at Makri Gialos in the center of the village is a small fishing shelter but it is surrounded by many cafes, fish taverns with very good food and bars. From the small port, ships depart for a pirate adventure to Koufonissi, an island with many caves and beautiful bays 10 nautical miles southeast of Makris Gialos. Koufonissi has many sandy beaches with fine sand, white rocks and turquoise waters. Children enjoy an incredible pirate adventure on board participating in lost treasure hunts, water pistol warfare, face painting and more. The excursion is organized daily from May to September.
To the east of the small port, there are two more beaches with fine sand and shallow waters. They are also organized with umbrellas, showers, lifeguards and bars. Also, kids can have a great day of water sports doing banana, sofa and kneeboard.
Makri Gialos combines a multitude of beaches for all ages and especially for children. Exploring them is a unique experience, ideal for the whole family.
