Vai

Vai is one of the most popular attractions in Crete and one of the most special locations in the entire Mediterranean. The sandy beach, the clear blue waters, the palm trees and the rocky islets create rare, paradise, landscape images at the easternmost tip of Crete.

Vai is located 24 km east of Sitia and 6 km away from Paleokastro. It is the largest palm forest in Europe with 5,000 trees and occupies an area of 250 hectares. The dry and warm climate of the area is suitable for the development of the palm trees. The trees are endemic and have been recorded by historians throughout ancient times.

Vai became famous in the 70s when the Bounty chocolate commercial was filmed there. However, there was an advertising gimmick as the Theophrastus palms, which grow here, only produce dates, not coconuts as advertised. Due to the large influx of campers in the 80s and the destruction they caused, the site was declared a protected area and the activities allowed are specific and limited. Now, it is forbidden to stay on the beach and to visit the blocked areas without a permit.

The beach is shallow, sandy with fine pebbles and is awarded with a blue flag every year. It is organized with umbrellas, showers, a lifeguard and a parking lot. It is nudist friendly and ideal for snorkeling and fishing.

On the right side of the beach, the path leads to an observation deck with a panoramic view of the entire bay and the palm forest. The rocky islet of Peristerobrachii just across the beach completes the landscape. In early spring and late autumn, a lot of small and large birds, which have found refuge in the welcoming Vai for their first and last stop to and from Africa, can be observed.

Vai is a stunning and exotic place and attracts visitors looking for a unique and scenic getaway in a destination suitable for relaxation and swimming, very well worth the visit.
